L’Etape du Tour is probably the most unique cyclo-sportive in the world. Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.) is used to pick up one stage from the Tour de France and open it to amateurs. This year, it was the stage from Megève to Morzine and over 15,000 riders came in on July 10th to feel the Tour de France experience. Kinomap was there too, using its motion video technology to capture the event.

In a close relationship with A.S.O., Kinomap launches the first indoor challenge related to L’Etape du Tour. The value of the Kinomap Trainer App, being used for that challenge, is to make it even more realistic: an indoor challenge based on real life videos, to feel the ups and downs as being on the road!

How does the indoor challenge work?

After the registration, participants will be asked to download the App Kinomap Trainer from the stores :

PlayStore AppleStore

Such App brings a new interactive and immersive dimension to the indoor training, giving access to thousands motion videos being shared on Kinomap including the ones from L’Etape du Tour, split in 3 parts :

  • Col des Aravis 6,7km long with a 7% incline up to an altitude of 1487 m
  • Col de la Colombière along 11,7 km and its 5,8% incline, up to 1618 m high
  • Col de Joux Plane lat one but still 11,6km long and 8,5% average incline to jump over at an altitude of 1691 m

Each participant has to follow or exceed the video at his own pace, trying to follow the rhythm of the original video like if being a ghost.

During their activity, participants get their instant power being produced (in Watts) and the accumulated effort (measured in Kinos, a virtual unit corresponding to kilojoules).

At the end of the workout, all efforts are securely stored on the Kinomap platform, keeping a track record of what has been done.

What are the next steps?

Online registration is opened since Oct 10th.

The challenge itself starts on Oct 24th and runs over 3 weeks, giving time to the participants to climb the 3 cols. The challenge will end on November 14th midnight CET.

How the ranking is made?

The indoor challenge will have 3 different rankings:

  • Smart trainers based on the best performance
  • Home trainers with manual change of resistance (having a speed and cadence sensor on the bike)
  • Trainer manufacturers, based on the number of participants

On top of the Finisher’s goodie, the best performers will get some free registrations for the 2017 edition!

Quite similar to the outside races, participants had to register. A $29.99 (or €) fee was requested to cover the cost of the challenge and a nice t-shirt given to the finishers.
